Gerry Esdale, Quarriers Institution

But what if victims already struggling to come to terms with what happened to them many years ago are told they can't launch a civil action against their abuser because they have waited too long? Today one victim is calling on legal chiefs to change the rules. It took Gerry Esdale nearly 40 years to speak to a lawyer. As a young boy he was sent to Quarriers. There he claims he suffered appalling abuse at the hands of his supposed carers. But he has been told his right to launch a claim expired in 1983. He said: "How is it affecting my life? Everything in general, my health, everything, just because of the way I was brought up. It is killing me inside." Quarriers was set up as a safe haven for children and for the vast majority it was exactly that. But for a minority, many of them still silent, the mere name Quarriers brings back painful memories. Time is supposed to be a great healer, but for those who finally feel they can talk about their experiences, time has become their biggest enemy.
